Learn the story of The Vault 1894

A Tradition of Family Hospitality Since 2006

Founded in 2006 by the City Freeman and his hospitality-expert wife a small pub began its life to welcome locals and visitors seeking a cosy retreat by the river Thames. The legend goes that before The Vault 1894 existed, the Freeman had at least a 10-minute walk between the last pub in the City and his home in Shad Thames, which is unacceptably long. Without much thought, he opened The Vault 1894 to enjoy a sip of fine beer before a brisk walk home!

Since then The Vault 1894 has been passed down to the second generation in the family to continue welcoming visitors and bringing joy to every guest that makes it through the door. And of course, treating the Freeman to a fresh cold pint!

The Vault 1894 is a gem by Tower Bridge! Excellent food, great drinks, and a fantastic atmosphere. Highly recommended for any occasion.

Our quirks and features

Low ceilings of the arches

Back in 1894 when Tower Bridge was built not many had to account for the growth of average height of a person. Visiting The Vault 1894 certainly transports you to the times when a ceiling height of 5 feet was perfectly reasonable! That is why we put over 7 warning signs on the walls around the pub to ensure our guests and members of the team duck their heads when going through the arches!

Mind your head!

History Photographed

The arch of Tower Bridge is a one-of-a-kind location with a rich history behind every brick that has been laid. You too can experience time travel through the history of Tower Bridge construction. Our walls are decorated with a timeline from the time of the initial design to the steady progress to completion, the time of the London bombing during World War II, all the way to Queen’ Elizabeth II Jubilee. There are many conversation starters there!
